- You can start your placement at any time of the year. You will be sponsored for a J-1 Visa for the duration of your Teacher Exchange program as specified by your host school. The maximum length of sponsorship is 5 months.

Requirements of Teacher Exchange Program in the USA
- The J-1 Teacher exchange program allows for full-time positions as a teacher of record where the teacher is responsible for the delivery of instruction, lesson planning, grading, and assessment of student progress. Positions, including duties, responsibilities, hours of employment, and compensation must be commensurate with those of similarly situated teachers in the school or district. Teachers are expected to meet all applicable state licensing and background check requirements.
- Assistants, aides, administrative positions, or other non-instructional positions are not permitted.
- Speech, Language, and Hearing pathologists or other occupational services are not permitted.
- Special education teachers may qualify depending on the position.
- Meet the qualifications for teaching in primary or secondary schools in their country of nationality or last legal residence; (Licensed Teacher)
- Be working as a teacher in the home country or country of legal residence at the time of application, or, if not working as a teacher, otherwise meet the eligibility qualifications and (a) have recently (within 12 months of application) completed an advanced degree and (b) have two years of full-time teaching experience within the past eight years;
- Have a degree-equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree in either education or the academic subject field in which they intend to teach;
- Have a minimum of two years (24 months) of teaching or related professional experience;
- Satisfy the standards of the U.S. state in which they will teach;
- Be of good reputation and character;
- Be seeking to enter the United States for the purpose of full-time teaching as a teacher of record at a primary (including pre-kindergarten) or secondary accredited educational institution in the United States (pre-kindergarten teachers must teach full-time, and at the pre-kindergarten level, may teach only language immersion at an accredited host school);
- Possess sufficient proficiency in the English language.

How do I apply for the internship program?

What does TransCareers needs to know from my US Host Company?
Your host company will be required to complete an Internship Agreement and provide information on the nature of your position, salary and dates of training components. They will also need to submit a comprehensive training plan - this is the most important part of the application.

Can I extend my J-1 Visa?
You can extend your J-1 visa for a maximum of 18 months. If your placement is for a shorter period than this (e.g. for 6 months), you can apply for an extension up to the total time of: Internship: 12 months. Trainee: 18 months. It is a requirement that you remain with the same employer and you must lodge the extension application before your original visa has expired. Extension forms will be supplied to you prior to your departure. Additional fees will apply.

Do I need to find an internship placement before I leave?
Yes. You will need to pre-arrange your training placement before you apply and arrive in the US.

Can I travel around the U.S after my internship authorization has expired?
Once your DS-2019 has expired you have 30 days from the expiration date to travel within the US.

Do I need Medical Insurance?
Your program fee includes health and medical insurance. Under US Government program regulations, you must have an approved level of insurance coverage. Our custom insurance plans meet this requirement. Our insurance covers you for emergency and accidents including hospital cover - but only while you are on the program.

Why do I have to pay to go on this Internship program?

What industries are acceptable for the program?
According to the regulations of the Internship and Trainee USA program, the US Department of State may designate training and internship programs in any of the following occupational categories: (i) Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing; (ii) Arts and Culture; (iii) Construction and Building Trades; (iv) Education, Social Sciences, Library Science, Counseling and Social Services; (v) Health Related Occupations; (vi) Hospitality and Tourism; (vii) Information Media and Communications; (viii) Management, Business, Commerce and Finance; (ix) Public Administration and Law; and (x) The Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics, and Industrial Occupations.
